FAQ

  1. Who will provide my anesthesia?
  2. Anesthesia services at the Cedar Lake Surgery Center are provided by Sun Coast Anesthesia. The group of Board Certified Anesthesiologist and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists have provided anesthesia at Cedar Lake for the past eight years.

  3. Will I receive any sedation before surgery?
  4. In keeping with our team approach, you and your anesthesiologist will develop a care plan prior to your surgery. If you feel you would like a pre-operative sedative, please discuss this with your anesthesiologist.

  5. What types of anesthesia might I receive?
  6. The anesthetic you receive will be specifically designed for your particular needs and medical indications. There are four main types of anesthesia:

    • General anesthesia - During general anesthesia, the patient is not conscious and has a complete loss of sensation.
    • Monitored Anesthesia Care - During monitored anesthesia, the patient receives sedation and medication to elevate the pain threshold. The surgeon will inject a local anesthetic to provide the loss of sensation necessary for the surgery. Close monitoring of your vital signs, cardiogram and other parameters will be performed by your anesthesia caregiver.
    • Regional Anesthesia - Regional anesthesia involves the use of a local anesthetic to provide anesthesia to a large region of the body. This type of anesthesia includes spinal anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, upper and lower extremity blocks and IV regional blocks. Additional sedation may also be provided.
    • Local Anesthesia - Local anesthesia can provide anesthesia to smaller areas of the body. This is most commonly injected by the surgeon and there may be no anesthesia care giver with you.

  7. How does the recovery care work?
    • Your physician will schedule you as a patient at Cedar Lake Surgery Center.
    • Following surgery, the Cedar Lake Surgery Center staff will manage your post-operative care.
    • At 6 p.m., if you require continued care, you will become a patient at Cedar Lake Surgery Center. This does not require you to move to another location. You will remain in the bed or recliner you're in and the nursing care will continue for as long as you require or until the following morning.
    • Within your recovery room, you will have your own television and private bathroom, as well as a personal nurse to coordinate your care and comfort.
    • Your friends and family may stay during our visiting hours. Special requests for one person to visit past 8 p.m. can be arranged, especially for our young patients who do much better when Mom or Dad is nearby.
    • You may go home any time during the evening or night with the approval of your surgeon. Please plan transportation accordingly.
Cedar Lake Surgery Center will provide you with a snack in accordance with the diet orders from your anesthesiologist and surgeon. Cedar Lake Surgery Center maintains a limited food pantry. Your family is also welcome to bring you food, provided it's in compliance with your physician's diet orders.
